No beat, no pass…. it’s as simple as that. Eventually, Lou found the beat and, not only did he pass the course, he gained a brand-new sense of confidence.

I suggest that there are 3 vital parts of the leadership ‘beat’ that when you act on them with consistency will provide amazing results:
- Your PURPOSE: Purpose is the “WHY” you do what you do. It is the answer to the question: Why do I exist? Spend time getting really clear on PURPOSE, and you will find the beat
- Your VALUES: Values are the “HOW” you LIVE. They are the truths that guide your behavior. What are your core values? Spend time getting clear on VALUES, and you will find the beat.
- Your VISION: Vision is your destination, where you are headed in the future. Spend time getting clear on VISION, and you will find the beat.
Years ago, while serving in the Army, in boot camp, I had the opportunity to play the bass drum during a long march. I had never played the drum before but always wanted to and this was my chance. My friend was playing the snare drum and he was very talented. All I had to do was keep the beat and accompany him. As we progressed in the march, I got caught up in the moment and began ‘jamming’ with my friend. I started to ad lib with the beat. The results were disastrous! And the drill sergeant let me know in very graphic terms. “NO BEAT, NO RHYTHM, NO CONSISTENCY!” How about you? LISTENING PAYS!
