How many times have you ‘put your foot in your mouth’ and you dearly felt the costs? Some people try to justify it by saying that their mouth is operating faster than their brain. The fact is, this dis-ease can devastate relationships.
Here are 5 sure-fire solutions to help you never put your foot in your mouth again:
1. Practice the Golden Pause. Before you speak, pause for a moment to collect your thoughts.
2. Ask yourself the question before you speak, ‘Is it of value?’ In other words, is what I have to say (or show) of value to this conversation? If so, speak; if not, don’t.
3. Ask yourself the question before you speak, ‘Is it life-giving?” Will what I have to say give life to this conversation? If so, speak; if not, don’t.
4. As yourself the question before you speak, “Will it improve the silence?” If so, speak, if not, don’t
5.. Practice the 4 Sufi Questions:
- Are these words true?
- Are these words necessary?
- Are these words beneficial?
- Ate these words kind?
If the answer is YES TO ALL 4, then SPEAK; if one or more ‘No’s’, don’t.
You can rid yourself of the disease of putting your foot in your mouth, if you commit and practice one or more of the 5 actions. Listening Pays!
